Listen – Fix You by Cold Play

A song steeped in a love so deep it is binding. Carrying the weight of your hopes and dreams, your fears and heartbreak. Your grief and loss.

Reportedly Chris Martin wrote this song for Gwyneth Paltrow upon the death of her father, and I do hope it’s true because what a tribute it is to love and loss of a loved one we loved so keenly. This song truly is the best from their catalogue; it was written with a deep and abiding care, a tenderness that tugs at the heart strings. An acknowledgement of the hopelessness that comes with a particular kind of loss that leaves one unmoored in the sea of grief, hoping they can wade their way out.

It is a farewell and a promise embodied in one song. I lost a dear friend recently and it encapsulates the feeling from that loss so perfectly.

Music is power often beyond our wildest dreams and when you find yourself in a place where grief terrifies your next step forward and leaves you with nothing, music wills you on. It starts with the beat of the heart, a gentle thump, thump at first. One day, one hour, one minute, one second at a time.

Fix You encapsulates the complexities of the human experience because at the end of it all, through love, loss and pain there will be someone or something there to fix you. Love. Above all else, Love. And in my opinion, this is simply the best song ever.
