‘Hello Jameson, how are you doing today?’
‘Good Doc. Very good. My mom sends her regards.’
‘I know, I spoke with her this morning.’ Dr Yomi Ore comes out from behind her desk to sit on the couch next to the son on one of her dearest friends. She and Summer have been friends for most of their lives, from kindergarten all the way to Yale and their many lives and loves in between and since. Her sorority sister through and through. ‘So, to what do I owe this Sunday morning heist. Didn’t you just return to New York.’
‘I did and I’m sorry to pull up on you like this but-’
‘Don’t apologise I’m pleased that I get to see you, twice in such a short time span. And you came with breakfast, an English breakfast at that.’
The maid had laid the table with the breakfast Jameson brought with him from The Old Town, only the best in the city.
‘How was Amsterdam and London, and seeing your mother?’
‘Good, all good.’ Jameson is starting to relax a little, he’d had such a good time with Sawyer in London, even if it was short and seeing his mother, coming clean to her about his relationship did him a world of good.
‘And the dreams?’ Yomi quickly goes into therapist mode.
‘Still vivid but that’s not why I’m here.’
‘Okay. I’m listening.’ Yomi silently acknowledged the change in Jameson; he has come a long way n their sessions.
‘I don’t think about her as much as I used to. Sometimes I cannot see her face clearly instead I see Sawyer’s where hers used to be.’
‘And how does that make you feel?’
‘Surprisingly, good. At peace.’
‘And you still want to marry Sawyer.’
‘More than ever. I don’t know that I will ever shake Brandy off but-’
‘Give it time. What happened with Brandy was trauma and not the kind you get over quickly even if it’s been three years, it’s a hard thing you went through and you’ve done well taking it one day at a time when you are not trying to bury yourself in work.’ She pauses to take a sip of her cup of tea before tucking into their breakfast. ‘How are the wedding plans coming?’
‘I didn’t make it to my fitting.’
‘Why didn’t you?’
‘That was the first time I blanked on Brandy’s face, and I freaked out because I am not supposed to forget her.’
‘But you are getting married to someone else.’ Her tone is so gentle, so delicate.
‘I know but you have to understand it’s complicated between me and Sawyer-’
‘And yet when you talk about her, you almost blush.’
Jameson rolls his eyes.
‘It’s true, this is the lightest I’ve seen you in a while dear boy and for more than a hot minute I thought we’d lost you.’
‘I stayed two days in Amsterdam, longer than I should have because I didn’t want to be far away from Sawyer, and then I decided fuck it, I am going to see her.’
‘And when you did?’
‘I felt… I don’t know it felt like… I cannot pinpoint the word to describe it.’
‘You know the word it’s right there on the tip of your tongue don’t hold back now Jameson.’
‘It felt like home.’
Yomi could have done cartwheels to rival Simone Biles at hearing that word Jameson confesses to, finally letting himself breathe easy and be honest. She has so much empathy for him, he’d gone through an awful tragedy, didn’t give himself the space to come to terms with it, and threw himself into his buoyant travel business. In a matter of twenty-four months, he’d scaled it to international acclaim worth nearly a billion. Jameson did not make time for love in his life until very recently with Sawyer Mulberry and Yomi is so pleased for him. At first, he tried to deny it, but something has changed, there’s a shift in his demeanour now, and he has turned a corner. The person sitting across from her this fine Sunday morning is no longer closed off and sullen, he is lighter, and dare she think it, glowing with love.
‘Home. That’s good Jameson. That’s very good.’ She stands from her chair, beckoning him to take a walk with her in the garden. ‘Now tell me about the wedding.’
