The best show on Netflix without question, right now. I love this show, I have loved every iteration of the Lincoln Lawyer, yes even the Mathew McConaughey version but this series on Netflix is quite simply fantastic and they upped the ante in season 2, granted I am not a fan of how they chose to launch it by splitting it into two, but this season was even more fantastic than the first.
Also, I should note that it is rare, so, so, rare that I prefer the film/tv adaption of a book or story than the book itself, and here… I DO.
Micky Haller is a lawyer who can colour out of the lines to get a good verdict, his blind spots are often his Achilles heel but when he comes round to removing the blinders and hits the bullseye it’s a beautiful sight to behold. Last season was the case of Trevor Elliot who despite being guilty of killing his wife Micky got him off in his big come back case (sorry if you have not seen season 1 its been on there for over a year so yeah, spoilers) Trevor gets his in the end from the lover of the man he killed who was also a lover of his dead wife- I SAID SPOILERS! In any case Micky is back for season 2 and this time its gets personal, the woman he has a one night stand with, who also happens to be an amazing chef, (side note: can we please have a recipe book based on her restaurant because I would eat there all day- so good) anyway, Miss Lady is being arraigned for murder of a developer who has been pressuring her to sell up and move out of the neighbourhood; gentrification man dem. And Lisa is unwilling to sell because she has set up this hot little spot that has become something more than just a place to eat for the neighbourhood. My man Mickey went there for a date with his first ex-wife only to end up sleeping with the chef… MICKEY YOU SLUT!
In any case the two tango or chacha in bed that night and it becomes a thing for the both of them but shortly into their entanglement, Lisa gets nabbed for murdering said development man and guess who decides to rep her for free… Mickey Haller is anything if not a lover man with a weakness for a particular kind of woman and Lisa is his kind to a T, down to the posole making.
The prosecutor however is Miss Andy Freeman, who is fiercely played by Yaya Dacosta, you remember her from ANTM? She was easily my favourite and deserved to win but its fine; looks like she is doing just fine without them and she has found her footing as an actress which I think was her first passion if memory serves. She is so good in this I actually despised her character. She was a ball buster and she put Mickey through the ringer. I am only allowed to love one lawyer here and his name is Haller but Yaya was flawless in this, absolutely flawless, I hope we see her next season.
Anyway, where were we? Yes Lisa, so the upshot is that Lisa did not kill development man but she is shady as all hell, she has a temper and she is not being honest with Mickey, but remember what I told you about him having blind spots, he has one where she is concerned but Mickey gets her off and he is right to because she did not kill developer man but he knows something is off with her and with him out of her sights and her insistence that he believe her, the pieces start falling into place and he figures it out… just because she is not guilty of one thing does not mean she is innocent of everything. As I said, when Mickey puts the pieces together, it is a thing of pure beauty.
Her husband hates oregano, but she has a herb garden of oregano in the backyard of her restaurant. This same husband that Mickey has been trying to get in touch with because he could be a good witness for her, which she insists Mickey forgets, but one day he suddenly turns up in Mickey’s office willing to testify to whatever… but he hates oregano! WHY DOES LISA HAVE OREGANO IN THE HERB GARDEN??
It all makes sense once you get there, and Mickey gets there in the most brilliant of ways. It really is the best lawyer series on Netflix.
The story lines are rich and multifaceted, the personal lines are always blurred which leads to even bigger dramas, the emotional ties really bind in this one and the dialogue is some of the most engaging there is. It is particular and packs a punch. Every single episode is a perfect symphony where each section sings off the screen like magic. The cast of characters are so perfect, the casting directors deserve a raise. Mickey, his ex-wives, and ex-cons all come together in a beautifully orchestrated and organic way to somehow, someway help save the day.
Did I tell you this was the best show on Netflix right now? Because it is.
