Self Perception- the DOVE project.

I came across this video yesterday on twitter and I’m so glad I did. In its latest campaign to promote real beauty, DOVE got together a group of women to sit with Forensic Artist Gil Zamora, so he could sketch them based entirely on their descriptions, from answers to questions he’d ask them. Each woman immediately drew on what she perceived to be her problem area; “freckles” “big forehead” etc. A second sketch is then drawn but based on the descriptions of persons they’d met earlier. In both instances, Zamora’s back is turned on his subjects. After the sketches are complete both versions are hung side by side, showing each woman a picture of how she sees herself and how the world, so to speak, sees her.

There was a stark difference between the two versions and in all cases the objective sketches were the more flattering.

What I found most compelling was the power behind the message. As women we are far too critical of ourselves and we spend forever fussing over what doesn’t work instead of enhancing what does. This video gets you to stop, take a step back and really think about how you see yourself and in that way addresses the myths of perfection. Nobody is perfect but our imperfections make us who we are. Most importantly, Self Perception is a powerful thing and in the words of my mother, you have to see yourself the way you want the world to see you.

Watch it. Live it. Believe it. You are beautiful.
