We are barely into 2014 and still smack in the thick of winter but designers already have us wishing for spring with their ad campaigns. There have been good ones, blah one and okay ones but the three that have me doing a double take are from Marc Jacobs, of course, MiuMiu and DKNY.
Marc decided to go with Miley and drop Juergen Teller, his long time collaborator for this campaign, Teller did not want to shoot Miley and Marc wanted Miley. Just that simple. The campaign was shot by David Sims instead.
The ad is hard, its very emo, very depressing, I suppose its bang in line with his show in September. I’m not a Miley fan per se but its no surprise that Marc went for the starlet because they’ve only been BFF’ing for a while now. Still its all very Marc, twisted, dark and testing the limits. It is what it is but something about it makes it work so well and I cannot picture anyone else in these ads but Miley Cyrus.
MiuMiu on the other hand has raided the Young Hollywood roaster and handpicked four of its most buzzed about young women to star in its ad campaign for Spring. Lupita Nyong’o, (12 years a Slave), Neighbours alum and Aussie actress Bella Heathcote who has two films coming out this year; one starring alongside Hugh Grant and the other written by Bret Easton Ellis, Elizabeth Olsen (Godzilla 2) and Elle Fanning (Maleficent) all have individual starring roles in the campaign which was shot by Inez and Vinoodh. The campaign is fresh and springy but lite at the same time. I’m drooling over Lupita Nyong’o’s look though I could do without the fringy bits, together with the neck scarf its a little over styled but she’s killing me in a good way in this shot. Especially from the waist down, even the shoes and socks. I want the bag in Elizabeth Olsen has in hers. I adore everything Bella Heathcote has on bar the Essex-y boots and I am so not mad at Elle Fanning’s combo its sweet yet laced with that subtle cool something.
As for DKNY, this campaign is packed with energy. I really loved the DKNY SS14 show and I’m glad to see even in a campaign the pieces pack a swish chic punch! I love the colour, I love the energy, I love the intrinsic New Yorkness, I love the diversity and I absolutely love that this is so true to the brand’s aesthetic but it offers something fresh and refreshing. This ROCKS.
Shot by Mikael Jansson the campaign features rapper ASAP Rocky, Pro skateboarder Dylan Reider, one of my model crushes; Jourdan Dunn, Eliza Cummings and model of more than a moment and most in demand, Cara Delvigne. Having seen the instagram shots during this shoot you could feel the energy and the vibe. Colour, attitude, and über coolness, this ad serves everything in so many shots. And most of all the fun-ness of fashion. Hats off!
From what I’ve seen of the spring ads I do hope its an indication of what’s to come, tearing down the status quo and widening that tight fashion gap…
